Free Knitting Pattern: Chunky Knit Tube Scarf

You can make this thick and chunky cowl scarf in one evening, watching your favorite TV-show, or take it with you as your travel knitting. Two yarns held together create beautiful tweedy texture and make it thick and quick to work in no time on large size needles. Easy pattern repeat makes it a perfect knit-on-the-go project.

TOOLS & MATERIALS

  • 2 skeins of Ideal by Bergere de France (40% wool 30% acrylic 30% polyamide, 37yds/125m in 1.8oz/50g), color Tabac (20564), or a similar DK weight yarn in your color—Yarn1
  • 2 skeins of Angora by Bergere de France (70% angora 30% merino wool, 120yds/110m in 0.9oz/25g), color Kraft (20090), or a similar lightweight fluffy angora/mohair-based yarn in your color—Yarn2
  • US size 15 / 10mm knitting needles (16″/40cm long circular needle for working in round or circular/straight ones for working flat in rows)
  • stitch marker, measuring tape, tapestry needle

Note: To achieve the marled tweedy texture, the cowl is worked with Yarn1 and Yarn2 held together. You can also use a single strand of a chunky or a super chunky weight yarn for this cowl (make sure you get the gauge).

rnd(s) — round(s)

sl1p — slip one stitch purlwise

RS — right side

[ ] — repeat instruction within square brackets as stated afterwards

WORKING INSTRUCTIONS

To work in rounds:

With the long tail cast-on method, cast on 72 sts, place marker and join in rnd, being careful not to twist the cast-on edge. Work repeating a single rnd for pattern:

Rnd 1 [k1, p3] to marker.

Continue repeating Rnd 1 until your piece measures 14″/35cm tall from the cast-on edge, then remove marker and bind off in pattern: knit stitches knitwise, purl stitches purlwise.

Break both yarns, fasten off, and weave in all loose ends.

To work in rows:

With the long tail cast-on method, cast on 75 sts. Work back and forth repeating the following 2 rows for the pattern:

Row 1 (RS) sl1p, [k1, p3] to last 2 sts, k2.

Row 2 sl1p, [p1, k3] to last 2 sts, p1, k1.

Continue repeating Rows 1-2 until your piece measures 14″/35cm tall from the cast-on edge, then bind off in pattern: knit stitches knitwise, purl stitches purlwise.

Break both yarns leaving a tail about 40″/100cm long, fasten off, thread this tail through the tapestry needle and make the vertical side seam using your preferred seaming method. Cut the excess yarn, fasten off, and weave in all loose ends.
